Services available for patient care at the Miami Children's Hospital offices beyond the consultative expertise offered by the staff include ultrasonography of the eye, visual field testing in kinetic and static modalities, fundus photography and external photography. In addition to the three pediatric ophthalmologists, the staff consists of 15 trained and experienced personnel who, like the doctors, are dedicated to providing quality care in a setting that is supportive and considerate of the special needs of infants and children.

Special areas of care include contact lens services for therapeutic as well as elective needs. Special lenses as those for infantile aphakia, anisometropia, bifocals for therapeutic and presbyopic indications are available, as well as a full range of lenses for myopic, astigmatic and hyperopic refractive errors. Cosmetic lenses for color enhancement or color changes are available. Training and care instructions are most important and are provided on site at the office. The optical shop specializes in the latest styles and specific needs for infants and children as well as youth. The optical shop also carries a full line of adult vision needs to fill prescriptions.

Contact Lens Fitting:

Selecting the correct contact lens for your eyes demands attention to five areas; the vision, the position of the lens on the eyes, the ability of you to handle the lens, how the lens feels on your eyes, and the selection of the best care plan and solutions for you.  Overlooking any of these areas will lead to unsuccessful contact lens use and can be risky for the health of the eyes. Our fitting procedures are planned to assure a high rate of success. We want to begin the contact lens wear with a total understanding of the lens wear and care so the advantages of contact lens wear can be enjoyed for years to come. Our fitting fees cover trying lenses, instruction on care and insertion/removal, determining the correct power, size and shape of lenses and a complimentary lens care kit. This process involves the initial fitting and instruction that takes about 1-2 hours, a weekly check and a monthly check. Only after the monthly check can we say what lens power and specifications we recommend or prescribe. Special lenses may require more extensive fitting procedures and can be discussed with us if you need this type of lens. Neither fitting fees nor special lens order fees are refundable.

Our fitting fees cover the above services and vary in costs, based on the type of lens that is needed. The fitting fees do not cover ophthalmic services from the physicians. The Table summarizes the services included and not included as part of the fitting fee. .

COVERED SERVICES
Fitting, including lens exchanges in fitting period
instruction on insertion, removal
instruction on care of lenses
initial lens care kit

SERVICES NOT COVERED
lens supply*
refitting for another lens type
re-instruction after initial month
refractive or ophthalmic services
supply of solutions .

Ongoing care is very important for continued success and safety with contact lens wear. The lenses should be checked every six months by a technician and changes made for power, fit and comfort. Every year the eyes should be completely examined by the doctors. Any time there is redness, discharge, pain or blurred vision, the lenses must be removed and not worn. If these symptoms continue for more than a day, the doctor should be notified on an emergency basis. If the lens is broken, dirty or coated with deposits, it should be discarded and replaced, no matter what the schedule. Soft lenses are best worn on a daily basis, removed each night and inserted in the morning on awakening. Each person has individual needs and schedules and instructions may vary from one person to the next. This is part of the fitting procedure and will be determined for your particular requirements and abilities.
